Why Does the Same Chord Need Wider Spacing in the Low Register?

A close-position C major chord—C, E and G—can turn into a blur when placed deep in the piano's bass register. Spread the same harmony across a low C, a higher G and an E further above, and its identity remains unchanged while its outline becomes clearer. The issue is not simply that bass notes are loud; register changes how the components of the sounds interact.

A piano note is not a single frequency but a fundamental accompanied by many partials. Research also shows that perceived consonance varies with register: at low frequencies, nearby components are more likely to interact in ways that create roughness. In a tightly packed voicing, several bass notes and their partials occupy neighbouring regions at once, making the root, third and fifth harder to separate. Pedal and room reverberation can prolong that overlap.

Wider bass spacing is therefore a listening decision, not an absolute prohibition. Compare C–E–G low on the keyboard with C–G below and E in the middle register. The second remains a C major chord, but places the colour-defining third where it is easier to distinguish. A close voicing may still work with a lighter dynamic, less pedal or a leaner instrument. For an adult learner, the useful habit is not memorising a universal lower limit, but asking whether the cloudiness comes from register, dynamics, pedal or touch before changing the voicing.
