Why Do Simple Answers Become More Attractive When We Are Tired?

Its effect on a particular judgment depends on the task, motivation, timing and the person; the evidence does not justify saying that fatigue always makes people believe a false, simple answer. At eleven at night, a complicated contract can suddenly stop looking complicated. The reader has not necessarily understood it. They may simply have become ready to accept the first coherent account. Earlier they intended to compare fees, exclusions and long-term consequences. Now the sentence “This is the safest option” seems sufficient to end the discussion.

It is tempting to call this a loss of willpower or to say that the brain has been reduced to “fast thinking”. Such explanations are appealingly simple, which repeats the very problem under examination. Fatigue is not one psychological variable. A “simple answer” might mean less information, a familiar rule, a default, a stereotype, or merely a conclusion expressed clearly. To understand how the two meet, the question has to be narrowed.

Research is most confident about the cognitive conditions produced by sleep loss, not about what a particular person must choose after a long day.

What insufficient sleep disrupts first

Researchers including David Dinges have studied sleep loss and performance over many decades. A 2010 meta-analysis by June Lim and Dinges brought together studies of short-term sleep deprivation, grouping tasks into attention, working memory, processing speed, memory and reasoning. Sleep deprivation impaired several domains, with sustained attention showing particular vulnerability.

Sustained attention is not an abstract capacity to “remain intelligent”. It includes noticing signals and responding on time during a repetitive or extended task. When people are sleepy, performance can become unstable: some periods remain close to normal while others contain substantial lapses. An average score may conceal that fluctuation.

Working memory matters as well. When comparing contractual terms, a person must hold the cost of one option while reading another and keep their own priorities available. When less information can be maintained and updated, preserving the full complexity of a problem becomes difficult. A familiar rule, the most salient attribute or another person’s recommendation can reduce immediate computational demand.

That does not automatically make the response irrational. Reducing computation under constrained resources can be adaptive. The question is whether the shortcut is suitable for the consequences at stake.

A long distance separates cognitive impairment from a particular decision

Sleep studies do not all use the same manipulation. Some keep participants awake for an entire night; some restrict sleep across several nights; others observe shift work or naturally varying sleep. Feeling somewhat tired today is not interchangeable with total sleep deprivation in a laboratory. The tasks also range from simple response tests and working-memory challenges to risk choices, advice taking and moral judgments. Each depends on a different combination of processes.

Recent reviews of sleep loss and decision-making show that risk preference, preference for immediate reward, cognitive flexibility and reliance on advice do not always move in one direction. An unchanged overall score can mask a change in strategy. Opposing processes can also cancel one another at the level of the final result. Rewards, feedback and the opportunity to compensate with extra effort modify performance further.

It is therefore unjustified to jump from “attention and working memory are impaired” to “a tired person is more persuadable by any message”. The second proposition needs to be tested with a particular communication, task and sleep condition. Familiar information may be easier to process, and a clearly stated conclusion can reduce effort. Simplicity, however, does not mean falsity, just as complexity does not guarantee truth.

Why “decision fatigue” needs additional caution

Popular writing often gathers insufficient sleep, repeated choices, stress, hunger and depleted self-control under one phrase: decision fatigue. The phrase can describe a subjective experience, but it risks creating a scientific unity that has not been established. Classic claims that willpower is consumed like a finite fuel have faced prolonged replication and meta-analytic controversy. Whether a sequence of choices worsens later decisions can also depend on task order, learning, boredom, motivation and time pressure.

Evidence about an experimentally measurable physiological condition should not be loaned to a much broader term. There is a defensible reason to avoid a major decision at midnight. There is far less basis for telling someone that, because they have made many choices today, they necessarily have no judgment left.

Fatigue also arises within institutions. A doctor on a night shift, a driver working extended hours and a carer whose sleep is repeatedly broken do not present only a problem of personal energy management. Rostering, protected breaks, independent checks and task design determine whether cognitive vulnerability becomes an accident.

Why a simple explanation can feel relieving

A complicated judgment requires several possibilities to remain open. Evidence may conflict and conclusions may need conditions. With sufficient attention and working memory, uncertainty can be maintained temporarily. As those resources become less reliable, a coherent story gains value because it permits search to stop.

Familiarity helps too. A well-practised rule does not need to be constructed afresh. This is one reason experts may continue to perform familiar tasks under fatigue. The advantage can turn into a liability when an unusual case appears: the familiar pattern is easy to apply, while the anomalous cue requires sustained attention.

Emotion and motivation cannot be removed from the account. A tired person may be more eager to leave a task, so their stopping threshold changes. If the cost of error becomes immediate and vivid, motivation may temporarily support performance. What looks like “believing a simple answer” can involve a changed belief, a willingness to stop comparing, or a decision to delegate.

Protecting consequential judgment

The most direct principle is to move high-consequence, difficult-to-reverse decisions to a relatively alert period. When delay is impossible, “try harder to concentrate” is not a sufficient safeguard. Externalise essential criteria with a short checklist, record what remains unverified, and ask another person to review the case independently. Aviation, medicine and other high-risk fields use procedures because reliability cannot be located in one person’s momentary state alone.

When several options need comparison, separate information preparation from final commitment. It may be possible to organise the contractual terms tonight and sign tomorrow. For a concise recommendation from an AI system or adviser, ask for its basis, omissions and alternatives. Fluency is particularly dangerous when it substitutes for evidence.

Ordinary life does not require every small choice to become an audit. For low-consequence and reversible matters, accepting a default or a good-enough option can preserve effort rationally. The point of protecting cognitive resources is not to turn each purchase into a research project. It is to reserve stronger safeguards for decisions in which error genuinely matters.

Persistent insomnia, unusual sleepiness or fatigue that affects safety requires medical or occupational assessment. A general psychology article cannot determine the cause and should not let “better decision-making” replace health care.

Judgment is not an isolated inner act

Fatigue reveals a broader fact: what we call one person’s judgment is often formed by bodily condition, task scheduling, records and review by other people. If the same material produces different conclusions at dawn and at two in the morning, that does not mean one of those moments contains the person’s only authentic self. The two judgments were made within different structures of support.

The conclusion is not that tired people believe simple answers. More precisely, sleep loss reliably weakens sustained attention and affects working memory and several executive processes. When a difficult judgment depends on those capacities, a person may narrow search, rely on a familiar strategy or accept an answer that closes the task quickly. The direction of the final choice remains conditional on the task and situation.

The remedy should not depend on achieving perfect self-knowledge while exhausted. A more reliable approach is to decide while alert which choices must not be completed under fatigue, and to build checks for consequential judgments that cannot avoid the night. Important conclusions then need not depend entirely on the condition of one brain at one moment.
