
You are writing a report at a crucial point, switch away to answer a message that requires judgement, then return to the report. The page has changed back, but part of your mind may still be replaying the exchange. The persistence of cognitive activity from one task into the next is called attention residue.
In two experiments published in 2009, Leroy found that after people moved from one work task to another, attention was more likely to remain on the first task when it had not been completed, and this was associated with poorer performance on the next task. The issue is not that both tasks are literally being performed at once. A person may have begun Task B while their goal system has not fully disengaged from Task A. Attention residue also differs from the broader idea of switching costs, which can include reloading rules and changes in response speed. Residue specifically concerns continuing thought about the previous task.
Later research found that residue was stronger when people expected to resume unfinished work under time pressure. Briefly recording where to continue before switching reduced the effect in those studies. The useful element was not a checklist as such, but giving an open goal a recoverable place.
Attention residue does not explain every loss of focus. A message’s emotional force, task difficulty, fatigue, individual differences and the work environment may all affect performance. Controlled studies also cannot assign an identical cost to every everyday transition. The more defensible conclusion is that tasks can change instantly while attention takes time to reconfigure, and unfinished work plus uncertainty about resumption can make that transition harder.
