Why Can an Audience Help Familiar Tasks but Hurt New Ones?

The same person may practise smoothly alone and then become unexpectedly clumsy in front of a teacher or colleague. Someone else may perform a familiar action faster as soon as an observer appears. These changes are often described as social facilitation and social inhibition. Early experiments found that another person's presence could speed well-learned responses while disrupting unfamiliar parts of a task that required careful control.

One classic explanation is that social presence raises arousal and strengthens the dominant response—the response most ready to occur. In a familiar task, that response is usually correct, so performance may become faster. In a new task, the first response is less stable, allowing tension and distraction to amplify errors. Other accounts emphasise divided attention and concern about being evaluated. These explanations need not be mutually exclusive.

For example, a thoroughly practised scale may gain focus and momentum when someone listens. A newly learned pattern of leaps still requires active monitoring of fingering, distance and rhythm, so social attention can consume cognitive resources that are already stretched. The person's ability has not necessarily vanished; the environment has changed which response is recruited first.

The evidence does not support a simple rule that familiar tasks always improve and new ones always deteriorate. Results vary with the type of task, whether the observer is attentive or evaluative, the duration of the experiment and individual differences. A meta-analysis of social presence in the Stroop task likewise found that effects changed with these conditions. The safer conclusion is that an audience is not a uniform source of pressure. It is a social condition that reorganises attention, arousal and the selection of action.
