
Dividing a new piece into short sections keeps reading, fingering and sound goals within a manageable span of attention. Yet if every section always ends at the same barline, the hands and ears may also learn to stop there. Each section can feel fluent on its own, while the join produces hesitation, rushing or a sudden change of tone. The difficulty may not be poor knowledge of either section. The act of ending one unit and entering the next has simply never been practised as an action in itself.
Research on movement sequences often describes longer actions as being organised into chunks. Activity within a chunk becomes increasingly automatic, but moving between chunks requires fresh preparation. A 2026 experiment involving pianists found that sensory perturbations at chunk junctions caused more errors and force instability than perturbations within chunks; practice directed at the junctions improved stability. The laboratory task was not ordinary repertoire practice, so it cannot prove that one sectional method is universally best. It does, however, show why a boundary can be part of what must be learned.
The answer is not to abandon sectional practice, but to move its boundaries slightly. After practising bars 1–4, begin the next section at bar 4 rather than bar 5. Alternatively, practise bars 3–5 so that the preceding harmony, hand position or breath genuinely leads into the next phrase. Overlap is not an excuse to run through a longer passage without purpose. It tests how one musical and movement unit prepares another. Only when the join is stable do separate sections become music again, rather than several familiar blocks that remain strangers to one another.
