Why Can a Sequence Repeat an Idea Yet Move Music Forward?

A sequence restates a musical idea at a new pitch level. Unlike literal repetition, its rhythm, melodic contour or voice-leading relationship remains recognisable while its notes and harmony move. We hear “the same thought” and, at the same time, notice that it has travelled. Repetition therefore becomes a source of direction.

Near the beginning of the first movement of Mozart’s Symphony No. 40 in G minor, familiar material is soon shifted downwards. The motion comes not merely from a lower melody but from the way each restatement relocates the bass and harmony. If every unit is played as a mechanical copy, the sequence sounds like an exercise. If each is given a wholly new expression, its continuity disappears. In a piano arrangement, or in a comparable passage, it is better to preserve articulation, note length and rhythmic proportion while listening for how each move increases tension, turns towards another key or approaches a cadence.

A sequence is therefore not a shortcut for avoiding new material. It uses a stable relationship to make change audible: without a recognisable model there is no sequence, but without a new pitch and harmonic position there is no forward motion. Listen first for the shortest model, then ask where each repetition begins and where it leads. Much of the momentum lies between those two answers.
