
Say “door, door, door…” rapidly a few dozen times and the familiar word may suddenly seem like nothing but sound. You might even wonder whether it was ever pronounced that way. Psychology calls this temporary weakening of meaning semantic satiation.
The word has not been erased from long-term memory. After a pause, its meaning usually returns. A more careful account is that intense repetition temporarily changes the processing relationship between a word’s form and meaning: the sound or spelling remains clear, but the associated concept is no longer accessed as automatically. Researchers have long debated whether the change is mainly semantic, or begins as adaptation to sound or visual form and only then disrupts meaning.
A 2017 EEG experiment asked 25 native Swedish speakers to read a word either 3 or 30 times. Letter case and font varied across repetitions to reduce simple visual habituation. Under high repetition, the N400 difference associated with semantic relatedness was reduced, supporting an effect on semantic processing. The sample was small, however, and the study did not fully exclude phonological or orthographic contributions, so it does not settle the mechanism.
This can look inconsistent with the idea that repetition helps learning, but the timescales differ. Spaced repetition can strengthen later retrieval; rapidly flooding the system with one unchanged form may briefly make its meaning less accessible. The word has not broken. What changes is the route into its meaning at that moment.
