What Is Ontology? Why Does Philosophy Study What Really Exists?

Ontology is the branch of philosophy that studies beings and their basic categories. It asks what exists, how things exist, and how different kinds of beings relate to one another.

Ontology matters because every theory assumes that certain things exist. Science assumes objects, laws, and measurements. Ethics assumes agents and values. Political philosophy assumes persons, states, and power. Philosophy asks whether these things are independent realities or products of concepts and institutions. In the modern world, ontological questions appear in data, platforms, AI, and virtual reality. What exactly is a digital asset, an algorithmic profile, or a virtual identity? Ontology is not an abstract game detached from reality; it helps us clarify what we recognize as real.
