An algorithm is a series of rules and steps designed to solve a problem or perform a task. It can rank, recommend, recognize, predict, and decide.
Algorithms matter because modern society increasingly organizes information and behavior through them. The news you see, the videos you receive, and the loan conditions offered to you may all be shaped by algorithms. Philosophy asks whether algorithms are neutral. They seem to operate by rules, but rules, data, and objective functions all contain human choices and power relations. Modern issues include algorithmic bias, transparency, explainability, and responsibility. Algorithms remind us that technical decisions are not purely technical. When rules are written into systems, they shape reality in hidden ways.
