On 19 September, the Beijing Municipal Administration for Market Regulation opened investigations into four companies associated with online hotel and travel booking platforms, following work directed by the State Administration for Market Regulation and earlier regulatory checks. The companies named were Hangzhou Taomei Aviation Services, Tongcheng Network Technology, Tujia Online Information Technology (Tianjin) and Beijing Sankuai Information Technology. Public notices said the investigations were being conducted under laws including the Anti-Unfair Competition Law and the E-Commerce Law. The matters remain investigations into suspected breaches rather than final findings. Meituan, Fliggy, Tongcheng and Tujia each said they would cooperate with regulators, while Meituan’s public notice said it would implement regulatory requirements. Reuters also reported that the China Hotel Association said the Beijing regulator had begun examining four online hotel and travel booking platforms over unfair competitive practices.
Australia
Revised rules for the Pension Supplement while recipients are overseas took effect on 20 September. Services Australia says a person travelling outside Australia temporarily can now retain the full Pension Supplement for up to 12 weeks, after which the supplement stops. A recipient who leaves Australia to live overseas loses the supplement from departure, and recipients already living overseas no longer continue to receive it. Under the previous arrangements, the supplement was reduced to the basic amount after six weeks of temporary absence, or immediately after permanent departure, and that basic amount could continue while the person remained entitled to the underlying pension. The 2026–27 Budget material identifies the Department of Social Services as the lead agency and allocates Services Australia $9.4 million through 2029–30 to implement the measure. The change concerns the Pension Supplement and does not itself end an otherwise eligible recipient’s main pension payment.
United States
On 19 September, reporters from CNN, MS NOW and Politico were denied entry to the White House, with relevant press credentials disabled or confiscated. The action followed President Donald Trump’s announcement a day earlier that he was banning the three organisations from the White House. Associated Press reporting said CNN reporter Betsy Klein and MS NOW reporter Akayla Gardner reported that their credentials had been deactivated, while Politico said White House reporter Cheyenne Haslett was also refused entry and had her credential confiscated. All three organisations said they would defend their First Amendment rights, and the White House Correspondents’ Association called for their access to be restored. Trump publicly said he imposed the ban because he regarded the organisations’ reporting as “fake news”. At the time of writing, the dispute had moved from a presidential announcement to an operational restriction on access to the White House, while the reporting reviewed for this briefing did not indicate that a court had issued a final ruling on these new restrictions.
