Claude Code 2.1.278 moves the auto-mode classifier to the server by default
Anthropic released Claude Code v2.1.278 at 03:10 UTC on 19 September. Compared with v2.1.277, the release changes auto mode for Claude API and Enterprise users, as well as sessions using Amazon Bedrock, Google Vertex, Microsoft Foundry and gateways, so that the classifier runs server-side by default. Anthropic's release notes state that the server-side classifier does not charge for classifier overhead. Bedrock, Vertex, Foundry and gateway deployments can opt out with CLAUDE_CODE_AUTO_MODE_SERVER=0, and the client warns when it falls back to a billed path. The /status command also gains an “Auto mode server” row showing whether the current session is using the server-side classifier.
The change concerns Claude Code's auto-mode control and billing path rather than a new Claude model version. The public release record confirms that v2.1.278 has been published as a GitHub release. Anthropic's public issue tracker also received a reproducible report on 19 September stating that a sandbox.excludedCommands regression beginning in v2.1.277 remains present in v2.1.278. That remains an open user-submitted issue and is not treated here as an Anthropic-confirmed defect or announced fix.

Huawei opens 10,000-NPU-scale shared Ascend compute to developers
At HUAWEI CONNECT 2026 on 19 September, Huawei announced that the Ascend open-source communities are providing partners and developers with access to shared compute resources at a 10,000-NPU scale. It also formally launched the 100 NPU-Hour Program, providing developers with a baseline allocation of NPU compute for model training, inference and related development. Huawei additionally announced CNY5 billion of investment over the next three years to support collaboration with universities, research institutions, industry partners and developers. Tech in Asia independently reported the basic facts of the 10,000-NPU-scale access, the 100 NPU-Hour Program and the three-year CNY5 billion commitment on the same day.
Relative to the UnifiedBus, SuperPoD and Ascend system architecture announcements made on 17 September, the new fact here is primarily a change in developer access and shared-compute conditions rather than the release of a new NPU chip. Huawei also connects the resources with the Kunpeng and Ascend ecosystems and tooling for agentic workloads. Public material does not yet specify the physical locations of the shared clusters, simultaneous developer capacity, queueing rules, complete eligibility conditions or independently measured utilisation. The 10,000-NPU scale is therefore recorded as Huawei's formally announced resource scale, not as an independently reproduced performance result.
