Pythagoras is usually regarded as a key figure in ancient Greek philosophy, mathematics, and the tradition of religious-philosophical communities. He was probably born on the island of Samos around 570 BCE. Later, he left the Ionian world and moved to Croton in southern Italy, where he founded a community that was at once a philosophical school, a religious group, and a disciplined way of life. As with many early Greek thinkers, the sources about his life mix history, legend, reverence, and later reconstruction. It is therefore important to distinguish the historical Pythagoras from the later Pythagorean tradition.
Ancient accounts say that Pythagoras traveled to Egypt, Babylonia, and other places to study mathematics, astronomy, and religious practices. These stories cannot all be verified with certainty, but they reveal how later tradition understood him: not simply as a mathematician, and not simply as a religious teacher, but as a thinker who connected number, cosmic order, care of the soul, and communal life.
1. Life and school
The community Pythagoras established in Croton seems to have involved strict forms of discipline. Members may have practiced silence, moderation, shared property, dietary restrictions, and rituals of purification. The group studied mathematics, music, astronomy, and ethics, but it also treated knowledge as part of a way of living. It was not an academic institution in the later sense. It was closer to a practical order in which knowledge, conduct, and spiritual training were joined together.
Very little reliable material about Pythagoras comes from his own lifetime, and no writings by him can be securely identified. Many doctrines later attributed to him may actually belong to the collective development of the early Pythagorean school. For this reason, “Pythagorean thought” often means both the thought associated with one founding figure and the broader intellectual tradition that grew around his name.
2. All things are number
The most famous Pythagorean thesis is that all things are number. Here number is not merely a tool for counting. It is a principle of structure. For the Pythagoreans, things have order, proportion, and intelligibility because numerical relations stand behind them. Musical intervals can be explained by ratios. Geometrical figures can be expressed through number and relation. Even the movement of the heavens can be understood as an ordered structure.
The significance of this idea is that it shifts explanation from a material first principle to form, proportion, and structure. Unlike Thales, who treated water as the arche, the Pythagorean tradition was more interested in measurable relation itself. The world is not only made of something; it is organized according to intelligible ratios and forms.
3. Harmony and cosmic order
The Pythagoreans placed great importance on harmony. The relation between musical notes could be explained through ratios of string length, leading them to believe that beauty, order, and mathematics were deeply connected. The cosmos was not an accidental collection of events, but an ordered whole with proportion, rhythm, and structure. The later idea of the “music of the spheres” expresses this tendency to understand the universe as a mathematical harmony.
4. Transmigration and purification of the soul
Pythagorean thought also had a strong religious and ethical dimension. Pythagoras was said to teach the transmigration of souls: the soul passes through different forms of life. Human conduct therefore matters not only as moral behavior in this life, but also as part of the purification and destiny of the soul. Moderation, ascetic practice, study, music, and mathematics could all be understood as ways of bringing the soul into order and purity.
This makes Pythagoras different from a purely natural philosopher. His question was not only what the world is made of, but also how one should live, how the soul can become ordered, and how a community might be organized according to higher principles.
5. Mathematical tradition and the Pythagorean theorem
Pythagoras is most widely known today through the Pythagorean theorem: in a right triangle, the square on the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares on the other two sides. It is important to be careful here. Related mathematical knowledge existed earlier in Babylonian and other traditions. The Greek attribution of this theorem to Pythagoras or his school shows above all his symbolic place in the mathematization of thought. What matters philosophically is that Pythagoreanism turned mathematics from a practical technique into a way of understanding cosmic order.
Historical significance
The philosophical significance of Pythagoras lies in the way he connected number, proportion, harmony, soul, and way of life. He gave lasting force to the idea that the world can be understood mathematically. In Plato’s philosophy, especially in the importance of mathematics, form, and purification of the soul, one can clearly see the influence of the Pythagorean tradition.
If Thales represents the beginning of explaining nature through natural principles, Pythagoras represents another decisive direction: the world is intelligible because it has numerical structure and harmonious order. This direction deeply influenced Western philosophy, mathematics, music theory, and the scientific imagination.
