自恋与自信有什么区别? / What Is the Difference Between Narcissism and Self-Confidence?

Self-confidence means “I trust my ability to handle something”. Narcissism is more concerned with how a person maintains a sense of importance and treats other people. Being loud, displaying achievements or enjoying praise is not enough to decide that someone has a narcissistic personality.

Same situation Healthier confidence A narcissistic-style pattern worth noticing
Another person succeeds Self-worth survives without diminishing them The person must devalue them, recapture attention or turn comparison into victory and defeat
Criticism arrives Discomfort is possible, but useful feedback can be considered Humiliation, retaliation or blanket denial repeatedly protects the self-image
A need is expressed The person asks while recognising others can refuse or negotiate Special treatment is treated as an entitlement and reciprocity disappears
Other people in relationships Others have independent feelings and needs Others mainly supply admiration, status or utility

Three distinctions must remain

A trait is not a disorder. People can sometimes be vain, defensive or hungry for approval. Narcissistic personality disorder involves an enduring, pervasive pattern that causes significant relationship or life problems. Only a qualified mental health professional can assess it.

Confidence is not one fixed score. Healthdirect distinguishes self-esteem from self-confidence, which often concerns ability in a particular area. Someone may be confident at work and insecure in intimate relationships.

Labelling another person does not solve a boundary problem. Instead of arguing about whether someone is “a narcissist”, describe observable behaviour: Is there persistent belittling, control, boundary violation or refusal of responsibility? What protection do you need?

This comparison cannot diagnose you or anyone around you. If a relationship involves control, threats or violence, prioritise safety support.
