Kununurra lies in the East Kimberley, at the far north-eastern edge of Western Australia. Many Australian towns grew around pastoral runs, mines or ports and acquired roads and water infrastructure later. Kununurra developed in almost the opposite order. In 1958, Commonwealth funding supported the first stage of the Ord River scheme, including a diversion dam, irrigation works and a new town. Kununurra was gazetted in 1961: the engineering purpose came first, and an everyday community formed around it.
That origin can still be read in the diversion dam and irrigation channels beside the town. Once the strongly seasonal river was regulated, agriculture developed on nearby plains, drawing together workers, technical staff, shops and public services. This is not simply a town that happens to stand near water. The storage, allocation and delivery of water are conditions of the town’s existence.
Yet water infrastructure never produces crops alone. Western Australia’s current allocation methods for the Ord River also incorporate ecological flows in a regulated river. At the local diversion dam viewing area, history is presented in English and Miriwoong language, reminding visitors that this is first Miriwoong Country. Opportunities created by engineering coexist with river ecology and much older relationships to land; none cancels the others.
What makes Kununurra memorable is therefore not a simple story of “making the desert green”, but the way a planned town turns infrastructure into social structure. The dam shapes farmland, but also employment, population, public services and local stories. In northern Australia, building a town can mean rearranging the relationship between people and water—and that arrangement must remain open to ecological and historical scrutiny.
