President Macron’s phone call to congratulate Hong Wang on receiving the Fields Medal has prompted some discussion. One simple explanation is that Wang studied and worked in France, so French congratulations were only natural. That is true as far as it goes, but it misses the more important point.
The historical comparison makes the distinction clearer. French presidents and governments have regularly offered public congratulations to Fields medallists with a substantial connection to French mathematics, whether they were trained in France or worked within its research institutions. But a personal call from the president is not a routine gesture made whenever the medal is announced, nor is it extended to every winner regardless of their connection with France. Public statements from the president or government have been the more usual form. This call was therefore more than ordinary diplomatic courtesy. It was a distinctly personal and symbolic recognition.
The solution of a major mathematical problem is an achievement for humanity. Wang’s own path makes this especially clear. She grew up in China, studied at École Polytechnique in France, completed her doctoral training in the United States, and now holds academic positions connected with both IHES in France and New York University. Modern mathematics cannot be owned by one country. France was not claiming her achievement; it was recognising a mathematician deeply connected to its research tradition and institutions whose work belongs to the world.
What matters more is that France has a long-standing mathematical culture. From Descartes, Pascal, Fermat, Laplace, Cauchy, Galois and Poincaré to the Bourbaki group and Grothendieck, mathematics has occupied a distinctive place in French intellectual life. It has often been understood as one of the most rigorous forms of reason. The French Enlightenment strengthened this outlook through its confidence that public reason could investigate the world, test claims and build universal knowledge. Fundamental research therefore does not have to demonstrate an immediate commercial return before it is taken seriously.
This should not be turned into a claim about innate national talent, or into a romantic notion of mathematical instinct in a people’s unconscious. What matters is the long accumulation of cultural tradition, education, institutions and public values. A country truly has a mathematical culture not when it tries to claim a laureate as its own, but when it understands the value of pure mathematics and gives such work a stable place over decades.
That is why Macron’s call has symbolic value. It does not mean that every Fields medallist receives the same acknowledgement from a French president. Rather, it shows that, in French public culture, a breakthrough on a foundational problem such as the three-dimensional Kakeya conjecture, together with a mathematician’s deep connection to French education and research, can warrant a serious and distinctive response from the head of state. It honours Wang’s personal achievement, but it also honours reason, knowledge and the long horizon of fundamental research.
