Why “How Are You Going?” Is Not About Transport

In Australia, when someone greets you with “How are you going?”, they usually are not asking how you plan to travel. They mean “How are you?” or “How are things going?” Here, going refers to your general state or how life has been progressing. It is a natural, friendly everyday greeting.

The simplest reply is “Good, thanks. How are you?” You could also say “Not bad” or “Pretty good”. The other person usually does not expect a detailed report, although with someone you know you might add, “Pretty good. Work’s been busy, though.”

The expression is less characteristic of American or British English, where it may initially be understood more literally. If you really want to ask about transport, “How are you getting there?” is much clearer.
