Scope: NSW and City of Sydney examples; services vary by library
The most underestimated library services are often not on the shelves. A public library is also a free doorway to information, equipment and community support.
Search by need, not only by book title
- I want to reduce subscription costs
- Look under eLibrary or online resources. Libraries commonly license ebooks, audiobooks, newspapers, magazines, language tools and research databases.
- I need to complete a work or administrative task
- Many branches provide computers, Wi-Fi, printing, copying and scanning. Some also offer meeting rooms, quiet work areas or equipment loans.
- I am new to Australia
- Look for English conversation, digital help, children’s activities and community talks. Programs vary, but library staff often know the local service network.
- I am doing serious research
- Go beyond Google. The State Library of NSW offers newspapers, journals, databases, ebooks and heritage material. Eligible NSW residents can access more than 80 per cent of its eresources remotely with an appropriate library card.
Find the hidden catalogue in one minute
- Search “your council + library online resources”.
- Check Events, Facilities, Makerspace and Local studies as well.
- Ask a librarian: “Which paid databases or publications can I use from home with this card?”
- Check eligibility, bookings, onsite-only limits and loan periods; resources differ between councils.
City of Sydney, for example, advertises free Wi-Fi and computers plus printing, copying and scanning. That does not mean every Australian branch has identical equipment. The real value of a library card is the service catalogue it unlocks, not only the number of books it borrows.
