边界感为什么不是拒绝所有人? / Why Don’t Boundaries Mean Rejecting Everyone?

A boundary is not a wall against everyone. It says what matters to me, what I can offer, and what action I will take under particular conditions. Good boundaries make relationships more predictable; they do not automatically end them.

Separate three kinds of sentence

A request
“Could you message before calling?” The other person can agree, decline or negotiate.
A boundary
“After 10 pm I put my phone on Do Not Disturb; for emergencies, contact …” The focus is how I manage my time and action.
Control
“You may not contact any friend without my knowledge.” It attempts to take over another person’s choices; calling it a boundary does not make it healthy.

A boundary formula that can be carried out

When a specific behaviour happens, to protect a need or value, I will take an action within my control; where possible, I will offer an alternative.

For example: “If insults begin, I will end the call. We can try again tomorrow afternoon when we are both calmer.” This is clearer than “You must respect me” because it identifies observable behaviour and an actionable consequence.

Boundaries need calibration

  • Too porous: repeatedly agreeing to things you cannot sustain, then relying on resentment as a warning.
  • Too rigid: treating all discomfort, disagreement or closeness as violation.
  • Flexible: safety and dignity remain firm while timing, method and frequency can be negotiated.

Where there is abuse or a safety risk, no contact, leaving or strict limits may be necessary protection; nobody should use “be more open” to override safety. In ordinary relationships, a boundary is often not a rejection of connection but the shape that makes connection sustainable.

This article cannot determine whether a particular relationship is healthy or safe. Contact 1800RESPECT about control, abuse or violence; call 000 in immediate danger.
