
Backward compatibility means that a new system can still accept inputs produced by an older one, or continue to honour conventions on which existing users rely. It allows change without forcing a complete break: if a new word processor can open an older file format, years of documents need not be rebuilt at the same time.
What compatibility preserves is a usable relationship, not an assurance that everything remains identical. An old file may open while some layout details shift; a feature may remain available while its speed or interface changes. Any claim of compatibility therefore needs a scope: does the new system merely read the file, can it edit it, or does it reproduce precisely the same result?
This differs from interoperability, which concerns how two systems operating at the same time exchange and understand information. Backward compatibility concerns how a new version carries forward the inputs and commitments of an older one. Nor does it mean refusing improvement. Compatibility often needs a translation layer and creates maintenance costs. The real question is not whether change should stop, but which older relationships are worth preserving, and for how long.
