How Did a Square of Paper Catch the Wind?

The materials for a paper pinwheel were never completely standard. For many Chinese children growing up in the late 1960s and 1970s, it might be made from coloured paper, a sheet from an exercise book, an old pictorial magazine or wrapping paper kept after its original use. The square was cut inwards along its diagonals, leaving the centre intact. Four alternating corners were folded towards the middle and fixed to a bamboo stick or strip of wood with a drawing pin or fine wire. If the axle was too tight, the blades would not move; if it was too loose, the pinwheel could come apart after a few steps. An adult often had to help with the sharp fastening.

Finishing the object did not mean that it worked. Children blew at it, held it near a window or took it into the yard, then loosened a trapped corner and tried again. When there was no breeze, they ran with it held out in front. There might be no formal competition, yet children naturally compared whose pinwheel turned fastest or kept moving longest. They could swap paper and sticks and argue about whether larger or smaller blades caught the wind more readily.

Materials differed by region, household and year, and shop-bought pinwheels also existed; homemade construction was never the only experience. What is worth remembering is that toy and making were not clearly separated. A child received not a closed product, but a set of relationships that could still be adjusted: paper stiffness, axle tension, wind direction and running speed. The pleasure came partly from watching the pinwheel turn, and partly from discovering how to make it turn.
