A Comparative Study of the Gospels: Authorship, Chronology, and Characteristics

📖

Although the four Gospels all record the life, ministry, crucifixion, and resurrection of Jesus, they differ significantly in authorship, date of composition, and literary style.

First, regarding the identity of the authors:

The Gospel of Matthew was written by Matthew, one of the twelve disciples, who had previously been a tax collector. The Gospel of John was written by John, “the disciple whom Jesus loved,” also one of the twelve, who had a very close relationship with Jesus. The Gospel of Mark was written by Mark, not one of the twelve, but a disciple and interpreter of Peter. It is widely believed to be based on Peter’s preaching. The Gospel of Luke was written by Luke, a physician and a companion of Paul. He was not one of the twelve, but carefully compiled his account through investigation and interviews.

Second, in terms of chronology:

Most scholars agree that the earliest Gospel was Mark, written around A.D. 60–70. It is the shortest and simplest, resembling a firsthand oral report. Matthew and Luke were composed later, between A.D. 70–90. Both drew upon Mark’s material while addressing different audiences: Matthew wrote for Jews, emphasizing Jesus as the Messiah foretold in the Old Testament; Luke wrote for the Greek world, stressing Jesus as the Savior for all people. John was written last, around A.D. 90–100. It is more theological in nature, highlighting the divinity of Jesus through His “I am” declarations.

Finally, in terms of literary character:

Mark is like a “news reporter,” presenting Jesus’ deeds in rapid succession. Matthew is like a “scholar,” citing the Old Testament extensively to prove Jesus as the Messiah. Luke is like a “historian,” orderly and inclusive, showing Jesus’ compassion for the marginalized and making His message understandable to Gentiles. John is like a “theologian,” revealing Jesus as the Son of God through profound reflection.

In summary, though the Gospels differ in authorship and sequence of composition, they complement one another and together bear unified witness to the salvation of Jesus Christ.
