
A bamboo rotor was a very simple object: a slender shaft fitted through a carved, propeller-shaped bamboo blade. A child held the shaft between both palms, rubbed the hands quickly in opposite directions, then released it. The spinning blade rose into the air. Some rotors came from small stalls, while others were made from scrap bamboo; because carving required a blade, adults often had to help. Materials and methods varied by place and household.
The difficult part was making it fly straight. If one side of the blade was heavier, the rotor veered. If the pitch was too flat, it produced little lift; if the bamboo was shaved too thin, it could split. Children retrieved it, removed a little material from the heavier side or adjusted the blade, then tried again. One high launch did not always settle the contest: friends might compare height, time aloft or distance, forming the rules through repeated flights.
Construction and play therefore belonged to the same activity. The toy had no complicated mechanism and no continuing source of power; after leaving the hands, it climbed on the rotation just imparted to it. Its interest lay not only in flight, but in discovering that speed alone was insufficient. The shaft had to be straight, the blade balanced and both hands released together. In a courtyard or open patch of ground, material, touch and observation became one small flying machine.
