From Solfège to the Structural Calm of Chinese Traditional Music


When practising Hanon scales, it is easy to treat them as nothing more than finger exercises. But if we look at them through solfège and modal structure, they become something deeper. They train us to understand that the same modal structure can be placed at different pitch levels, and each shift creates a different pattern of white and black keys, a different fingering habit, and a different sound world.

The difference between movable-do solfège and fixed-do solfège reveals this very clearly. Movable-do solfège is concerned with the function of a note within a key. In C major, C is do. In D major, D is also do, because D is the tonic. In this way, different major keys are reduced to the same functional structure, do re mi fa sol la si do. Movable do emphasises relationship rather than absolute pitch.

Fixed-do solfège works differently. C is always do, D is always re, and E is always mi. In this system, D major is not sung as do re mi fa sol la si do, but as re mi sharp fa sol la si sharp do re. E-flat major presents yet another fixed pitch pattern. At first sight, each key seems to have its own set of notes and accidentals. More accurately, however, they are not different modes. They are the same major structure transposed to different pitch positions.

This distinction matters. A mode is not defined merely by the names of the notes. It is defined by the relationships between the notes. C major and D major use different actual pitches, but their internal pattern is the same, tone, tone, semitone, tone, tone, tone, semitone. They share the same major mode, while beginning from different tonic positions. Fixed do shows us the actual pitch material of each key. Movable do shows us the functional structure behind that material.

If we push this question further, we arrive at the reason atonal music emerged. Traditional tonal music has a centre. Music moves away from that centre and returns to it. The tonic functions like a home, while the dominant, the leading tone and dissonant tones gain their meaning within this gravitational field. In C major, B naturally tends to resolve to C. That tendency does not come from B as an isolated sound. It comes from B’s position inside a tonal structure.

Atonal music removes precisely this central order. It is not music without rules. Rather, it no longer allows one note to function as the governing centre, nor does it require the other notes to form a hierarchy around that centre. The twelve semitones are placed in a more equal relationship. Traditional tonal music organises tension through tonic, dominant and resolution. Atonal music tries to organise sound through other forms of relation. It expresses a modern experience without clear belonging, stable landing, or the familiar feeling of returning home.

From this perspective, Chinese traditional music follows another path again. Its most basic structure is the pentatonic scale, represented by gong, shang, jue, zhi and yu. Using C as an example, this roughly corresponds to C, D, E, G and A, or do, re, mi, sol and la in fixed-do terms. It omits fa and si, the two notes that most strongly produce semitone tension and leading-tone pressure in the Western seven-note scale.

This does not mean Chinese traditional music has no centre. Gong, shang, jue, zhi and yu can each become the centre of a different mode, forming gong mode, shang mode, jue mode, zhi mode and yu mode. But this sense of centre is not identical to the tonic centre of the Western major-minor system. In Chinese traditional music, the centre is often formed through melody, breath, cadential tones, vocal style and long listening habits, rather than through the strong harmonic resolution from dominant to tonic.

In this sense, the basic structure of Chinese traditional music is indeed more stable. The pentatonic scale naturally reduces sharp semitone conflicts and weakens the pressure of compulsory resolution. It does not usually drive music forward through harmonic conflict, modulation, development, climax and resolution in the same way that much Western classical music does. It places more emphasis on horizontal melodic unfolding, the breathing relationship between notes, and the internal transformation of a single sound.

But this does not mean Chinese traditional music lacks emotional tension. Its tension does not mainly come from harmonic conflict. It comes from timbre, slides, breath, rhythm, rhythmic modes, vocal inflection and narrative expression. The ornaments of the guqin, the vibrato and sliding tones of the erhu, the breath control of the dizi, and the tremolo and sweeping techniques of the pipa all carry tension within the process of sound production itself. The tension is not stacked vertically in chords. It is held inside a single tone, in the turn of a phrase, or in the release and restraint of breath.

This is one of the deeper differences between Chinese and Western music. Western tonal music often resembles drama. It asks how conflict arises, develops and resolves. Chinese traditional music is closer to the unfolding of a state. It asks how sound appears, how breath flows, and how emotion is held with restraint. One relies more on structural opposition and return. The other relies more on linear unfolding and the maintenance of expressive atmosphere.

So it is reasonable to say that Chinese traditional music is generally more stable and restrained, but it is too simple to say that it lacks conflict. A better formulation is that because Chinese traditional music is grounded in the pentatonic scale and melodic unfolding, it reduces the sharp harmonic conflicts often found in Western tonal music. As a result, it tends to sound calmer and more implicit. Yet it does not lack emotional tension. That tension is located more in timbre, breath, sliding tones, rhythm and narrative expression.

From Hanon scales to solfège, from modal structure to atonal music, and then to the pentatonic system of Chinese traditional music, the question is ultimately the same. Music is not a pile of isolated notes. It is a structure of relationships formed between notes. Movable do reveals functional relationships. Fixed do reveals actual pitch material. Atonal music removes the traditional centre. Chinese traditional music builds another sound world through fewer notes and more stable relations. Once we understand this, practising scales is no longer merely finger training, and listening to music is no longer merely hearing melodies. It becomes a way of hearing how a structure is maintained, shifted, released and reorganised.
