Chapter I: The Antinomy of Practical Reason

  • 在理论理性中,自由与因果确实是矛盾的;

English:

In this chapter, Kant formulates the “Antinomy of Practical Reason,” the conflict that arises when moral reasoning confronts determinism.

  • On one hand, the empirical world follows natural causality; every action seems necessarily determined.
  • On the other hand, the moral law requires us to assume that man is free; otherwise, the notion of “ought” would be meaningless.

Kant resolves this by his critical method:

  • In theoretical reason, freedom and causality do appear contradictory.
  • But in practical reason, freedom is not an empirical fact but a transcendental presupposition of moral action.
Therefore, man must regard himself as free in the moral sphere.

(Key Points)

(Natural causality vs. Free will)
(Theoretical reason cannot resolve the conflict)
(Practical reason must presuppose freedom)

问答 (Q&A)

Q1 English: Why are natural causality and free will in conflict?

A1 English: Because natural causality implies every event is determined by prior causes, while free will means man can choose actions independently.

Q2 English: How does Kant resolve this contradiction?

A2 English: He argues that freedom cannot be proven as an empirical fact, but it is the presupposition of the moral law. Without freedom, morality would be impossible.

Q3 English: Does this mean Kant “assumes” freedom?

A3 English: Yes. In Kant’s system, freedom is a “necessary postulate of practical reason,” not an object of scientific proof but a condition of moral action.

(The Four Antinomies of Pure Reason)

(Antithesis)
(The world has a beginning in time and is limited in space.) (The world has no beginning in time and no limits in space.)
(Every composite substance in the world consists of simple parts.) (No composite thing in the world consists of simple parts; everything is infinitely divisible.)
(There exists freedom as a kind of causality beside natural causality.) (There is no freedom; everything in the world happens solely according to natural laws.)
(There exists an absolutely necessary being as part of the world or its cause.) (There exists no absolutely necessary being, either within the world or outside it as its cause.)

(Kant’s Resolution)
