Chapter III: On the Incentives of Pure Practical Reason
(Achtung, Reverence for the Law)”来驱动。
English:
In this chapter, Kant examines what motivates us to act according to the moral law. In the empirical world, motives usually come from desires, pleasures, or benefits—these are external “incentives.” But Kant insists that genuine moral action must be motivated by respect (Achtung) for the law.
This “respect” is not an empirical emotion but reason’s necessary acknowledgment of its own legislation. In other words, we act morally not because the moral law brings advantage, but because the law itself demands it.
(Key Points)
(Empirical incentives vs. Pure incentive)
(Respect is the sole proper incentive of the moral law)
(The worth of an action lies in being done from the moral law)
问答 (Q&A)
Q1 English: According to Kant, what is the true incentive of moral action?
A1 English: Not desire or benefit, but “respect” for the moral law.
Q2 English: Is this “respect” a kind of feeling?
A2 English: Not an ordinary feeling, but reason’s necessary acknowledgment of its own legislation—a rational attitude.
Q3 English: Why does Kant emphasize the purity of motivation?
A3 English: Because if an action is done for results or benefits, it loses moral absoluteness; only when done out of respect for the law is it unconditionally good.
English Explanation
- Absolute on the empirical level: In the empirical world, we cannot truly find an absolute moral standard, because every judgment may be influenced by culture, history, society, and personal inclinations. Thus, absoluteness at the empirical level always turns out relative.
- Absolute on the rational level: What Kant emphasizes is that the necessity of the moral law does not come from experience but from reason’s own legislative capacity. In other words, the absoluteness of morality is a transcendental, rational absoluteness.
- This is embodied in the Categorical Imperative: the universalization principle does not depend on empirical facts but arises from reason’s self-demand.
- It is also embodied in freedom and autonomy: man must regard himself as free, otherwise morality would collapse altogether.
Thus, Kant’s “absolute morality” does not mean “a concrete empirical action is always and unconditionally right,” but rather that “the universal law demanded by reason has unconditional validity.”
- 不再试图证明不可证明的东西(比如上帝存在);
English Explanation
- Methodological continuity:
In the Critique of Pure Reason, Kant clarified metaphysical disputes (e.g., God, soul, freedom) by analyzing the limits of theoretical reason, showing that such things cannot be proved theoretically.
In the Critique of Practical Reason, he applies the same approach: distinguishing empirical reason from pure practical reason, and setting boundaries for its proper use. - Clarifying by setting limits:
For example, the dispute about whether freedom exists cannot be resolved by theoretical reason, since natural causality seems to conflict with freedom. Kant sets the boundary: freedom cannot be proven theoretically, but it must be presupposed by practical reason. Thus, the debate is clarified. - Core idea:
Kant’s critical method means:
- Stop trying to prove the unprovable (e.g., God’s existence).
- Instead, define reason’s limits and preserve these ideas as legitimate in practice.
In this way, many age-old disputes (fate vs freedom, the absoluteness of morality, God’s existence) find a new resolution.
