
Before a concert begins, the oboe sounds an A and the rest of the orchestra joins in. The point of the custom is not that an oboe is always perfectly in tune. It is that the instrument can provide a common reference everyone can recognise. Its focused, penetrating colour remains audible amid stage noise, while a skilled principal oboist can prepare the reed and instrument to match the pitch agreed by the orchestra. The international standard sets the A above middle C at 440 hertz, although particular orchestras may choose another reference.
The oboe is still affected by temperature, humidity and the condition of its reed. Indeed, because making a large last-minute change to its overall pitch is less convenient than turning a string peg, the oboist first settles the A and the other sections align with it. A common sequence is to tune the winds, then have the concertmaster lead the strings, though procedures can vary, especially when a piano is involved.
Most importantly, this ritual establishes a starting point; it does not settle intonation for the whole performance. Harmonic function, dynamics, temperature and neighbouring parts all affect the small adjustments players make. What matters in the apparent pre-concert commotion is a group bringing many changeable instruments onto one shared coordinate. A piano is tuned beforehand and cannot alter each note during performance. That contrast makes the deeper point especially clear: orchestral intonation is a continuing act of listening, not merely a reading on a device.
