
After hearing an unrelated shopping list and recalling it immediately, people often report more items from the beginning and the end than from the middle. This change in recall by location is called the serial-position effect. The advantage for early items is the primacy effect; the advantage for the last items is the recency effect.
One classic account is that early items arrive when there is less competition, allowing more rehearsal and more stable connections with existing knowledge. The final few items are temporally closest to recall, so their time and context cues remain easier to access; people also often begin their response from the end. Middle items gain less of the early rehearsal advantage while facing interference from both directions.
The two advantages should not be treated as simple proof of two fixed memory “stores”. A distracting task placed between presentation and recall often reduces recency. Changing presentation rate, recall order, material or list length can redraw the entire curve. A 2017 experiment with word lists of different lengths found clear primacy but very limited recency, showing how much the procedure matters.
The effect therefore shows that position changes the conditions of encoding and retrieval; it does not guarantee that the opening and closing of a meeting will always be most memorable. Meaning, emotion, familiarity and attention can outweigh position. It is sensible to use the beginning and end for important information, but reliable communication still requires structure and a later test of retrieval, not merely placing the key point in the final sentence.
