Why Are Four Spaced Reviews Easier to Retain?

Reading twenty foreign-language words four times in one evening may feel fluent by the end. Spreading the same four reviews across several days feels harder. Yet on a test weeks later, the spaced version will usually be remembered better. This is the spacing effect: learning events separated in time tend to support delayed memory better than repetitions packed together.

During massed repetition, the previous encounter remains active in attention and short-term processing, so the next pass can be mistaken for mastery. When some time has elapsed, part of the memory trace has weakened and the learner must retrieve it again. Successfully completing this more effortful retrieval can update the memory, while different times and settings may add cues that later help access it. Greater difficulty during practice therefore does not necessarily mean poorer long-term learning.

This is not a law that “longer gaps are always better”. If the interval is too short, the next encounter requires little fresh retrieval; if it is too long, recall may fail completely. A 2006 quantitative review found that a useful interval depends partly on how long the material must ultimately be retained. A recent meta-analysis of classroom learning also favoured distributed practice overall, but ages, subjects, tests and implementations varied substantially. An average effect cannot prescribe one schedule for everyone.

The central point is not to fragment study as much as possible. It is to avoid making every repetition depend on familiarity that has not yet faded. A useful gap makes the material somewhat harder while still allowing it to be recovered with a cue or feedback.
