
When learning a Bach two-part invention, an adult pianist may try to hear every note in both hands at once. Attention then jumps from side to side, while neither line is genuinely connected. The difficulty is not only bimanual movement. Polyphonic music makes two demands on auditory attention: each voice must be independently trackable, yet the voices must also be heard as a related whole.
An EEG study of multi-voiced music offers a useful distinction. When participants heard structurally coherent flute duets, the two voices were more readily integrated perceptually. When the melodies were jumbled and lost their organisational relationship, listeners were more likely to attend to one line and neglect the other. This does not directly prove that one piano practice method is best. It does suggest that hearing several lines together depends on intelligible musical organisation, not on mechanically dividing a limited amount of attention in half.
The hands can remain together while listening goals alternate. First follow where the upper voice begins and breathes. Next attend to the lower voice and check that it is not merely a row of accompaniment notes. Then hear how imitation, displacement and cadence connect the lines. If one voice cannot yet be followed alone, demanding instant awareness of the whole will preserve vagueness.
The point is not to keep one voice permanently prominent. It is to build clear auditory objects through alternating focus, then allow musical structure to do the integrating. Polyphonic independence and wholeness are not opposites: the first makes relationships distinguishable, and the second makes them meaningful.
