Why Can Memory Extend Beyond a Photograph's Boundaries?

After viewing a close photograph of a kitchen, people sometimes remember a wider view: there seems to be more space around the table and the objects appear slightly farther from the camera. This systematic distortion is called boundary extension. It does not necessarily involve imagining a specific object beyond the frame. Rather, possible surrounding space becomes mixed into memory for the pictured view.

Vision does more than register the pixels inside a photograph. When we see part of a table and a wall, we rapidly understand them as pieces of a continuous scene and predict that the space cut off by the frame continues. At recognition, the observed view and this prediction may not remain perfectly separate, so the original close-up can seem “too close”.

Boundary extension is not a fixed rule for every picture. A 2020 study using more than a thousand images and about two thousand participants found that close views dominated by central objects were more likely to be remembered as wider, while distant, expansive scenes could show the opposite error, boundary contraction. Later work likewise indicates that viewing distance and scene composition influence the direction of the bias.

Memory is therefore not a photographic archive. It reconstructs a scene from what was seen together with reasonable predictions. This usually helps place a partial view within a continuous world, but it also means that “I remember seeing it” may include material supplied by understanding. The research describes an average tendency, not proof that every memory held by an individual is distorted in this way.
