
After repeated practice, the fingers form continuous action sequences and a pianist no longer needs to think through every note. This automaticity is not a weakness; speed and fluency depend on it. The difficulty is that one movement often cues the next. If a wrong note, anxiety or an external sound interrupts the chain, the following passage may suddenly have no reliable point of entry.
Chaffin and Imreh documented a concert pianist learning the final movement of Bach's Italian Concerto. The pianist did not rely only on movement and sound. She used the formal structure as a retrieval framework and established “performance cues” at important locations, including voice entries, harmonic turns, fingering decisions and intended expressive directions. A case study cannot represent every learner, but it shows clearly that secure memorisation does not replace one kind of memory with another. Different cues support one another.
An adult learner can establish a small number of clear entry points at section boundaries, harmonic changes or easily confused passages, practise starting from them, and know what comes next. This does not mean verbally analysing every moment during performance. It means preparing a mental map that can be entered deliberately. The fingers keep the music moving; structure and hearing provide direction, and help the pianist recover when continuity is broken.
