
Adult learners often look down repeatedly when practising leaps, position changes or wide intervals. Vision is useful; the problem arises when the eyes perform all the orientation work, leaving the movement without direction as soon as direct observation stops. Briefly returning the gaze to the score, or closing the eyes for one familiar connection, can expose this dependence. It is a diagnostic change of condition, not a claim that playing blind is more advanced.
The research needs cautious interpretation. A 1995 sight-reading experiment found that removing the view of the keyboard increased adjacent-note errors, showing that pianists do use vision to guide discrete hand movements. In a 2024 exploratory study, 17 experienced pianists played the first Hanon exercise from memory and also made more note errors when blindfolded. These findings do not show that eliminating vision improves learning. They show instead that vision is a normal part of performance feedback. The samples and tasks were limited and should not be generalised to every adult or every piece.
The practical inference is narrower. Choose one or two bars that are already correctly read, play them normally, then briefly remove the keyboard from view and notice where the error occurs. If the same position change repeatedly lands one note away, the issue may not be forgetting the pitch. The hand may lack a stable representation of distance, the pattern of black and white keys, and preparation for the landing point. Reopen the eyes, recalibrate, and bring touch, hearing and vision back together. The goal is not to discard sight, but to prevent it from carrying orientation alone; reliable movement comes from several senses checking one another.
