
On a piano, a key sets a hammer in motion to strike a string. On an accordion, the key supplies no sounding energy by itself. Its mechanism merely opens a valve in front of the relevant reed. Only when the player also pushes or pulls the bellows does air pass a metal free reed, fixed at one end, and make it vibrate through its frame. With the bellows still, pressing keys is simply opening doors.
That difference shapes the instrument's dynamics and phrasing. A pianist largely determines loudness at the instant of attack, after which the sound naturally decays. An accordionist can alter bellows pressure while a note is sounding, making it swell, fade or continue steadily. When listening, notice not only the right-hand melody and left-hand chords, but whether the airflow remains continuous around a change of bellows direction and how pressure changes the colour and weight of a note.
Even so, “pull harder and it gets louder” is too simple. Valve opening, the selected reed ranks, reed response and the direction of travel all affect the result; excessive pressure can also make an attack coarse. The bellows are not an accessory but the breathing system of this keyboard instrument. For a pianist, the broader lesson is clear: identical-looking black and white keys need not imply the same sound-making logic. A phrase has to follow the way its instrument actually receives energy.
