Why Does a Growing Sound Feel More Urgent Than a Fading One?

When an unseen car produces a steadily growing sound, we often feel at once that it is approaching. Reverse the same change so that the sound fades, and the sense of departure is often less compelling. This asymmetry is commonly called an auditory looming bias.

Neuhoff’s experiments presented changes in sound intensity moving in opposite directions. Participants tended to perceive an increase as larger than a physically matched decrease. One plausible explanation is that, in natural settings, an approaching source raises the intensity reaching the ears, and an approaching object may soon enter the space around the body, demanding judgement and action. A hearing system that responds a little too early to approach may carry less risk than one that responds too late.

Yet a growing sound does not prove that an object is moving closer. A stationary source can increase its output, while room reflections, direction and frequency also alter loudness cues. Simple tones in experiments do not represent every real setting, and attention, source type, visual information and individual hearing differences can all change the response. This is an average perceptual bias, not a dependable instrument for measuring distance.

The effect reminds us that perception does not record physically symmetrical changes in a perfectly symmetrical way. The brain weights change partly by what it may require us to do. Equal increases and decreases can therefore receive unequal processing because their possible consequences differ. A rising notification, reversing alarm or approaching footstep captures attention through acoustics, but also through this priority given to potential approach.
