
When the same note is missed repeatedly, the natural response is to play it several more times. Yet “the error happens here” does not mean “the cause begins here”. Suppose F-sharp in a left-hand chord keeps becoming F. The learner may have overlooked the key signature, may internally hear F, or may know the correct pitch but retain a fingering that leaves the hand in the wrong place after the preceding chord. The visible result is the same, but each cause requires a different correction.
Begin with one small diagnostic test. Naming the note away from the keyboard checks the reading. Singing the target pitch within the chord checks the aural image. Silently placing the two successive hand positions checks the movement. Only then should the passage be replayed in rhythm. Rebuild from the first stage at which the information breaks down. Research on deliberate practice stresses specific goals and immediate feedback, while studies of piano practice show that quality cannot be measured by total time or repetition count alone. These findings supply a principle; they do not diagnose the cause of a particular wrong note for you.
The central point is simple: repetition strengthens information that has already been organised. If the cause remains unidentified, repetition may make the wrong route more familiar. Effective correction gives the error a testable explanation rather than merely giving the note more attempts.
