
When an adult pianist reaches a long melody note, attention often moves immediately to the accompanying notes below. The long note has been struck correctly and the key remains down, so the task seems finished. Yet once a piano hammer has struck, it leaves the string and the sound can only decay. Continuing to hold the key keeps the damper raised; it cannot make the tone grow again. Whether that fading sound is still heard as melody depends on the notes that follow it.
Consider a nocturne in which a long right-hand tone extends over a broken-chord accompaniment. If every new left-hand note keeps the same weight, its fresh attack gradually masks the disappearing melody. If the pedal is too deep, the resonance may instead blur into the new harmony. In practical terms, the useful task is not simply ‘keep the right finger down’. It is to hear the long note’s path from clarity to thinness, then adjust left-hand weight, note length and pedal change as that decay unfolds.
Acoustically, string vibration passes through the bridge to the soundboard, which sets the air in motion. The colour and resonance are also affected by small differences among the several strings used for one piano note. These facts explain why the sound changes, but they cannot prescribe one accompaniment balance. Every piano, register and room alters the rate of decay, so the final decision must come from listening in the moment.
