Why Change Fingers While Holding the Same Key?

When a score places “5–4” beside the same held note, it usually does not mean playing the note again. The fourth finger replaces the fifth while the key remains depressed. There is no new onset, but the hand's position changes. This silent substitution is useful when a melody note must continue while the same hand prepares for another interval, inner voice or chord.

Suppose the right-hand fifth finger holds a high melody note and must reach a more distant note on the next beat. If it remains occupied, the hand may have to jump abruptly. If the fourth finger gently joins and takes over at the keybed, the fifth can release early and the hand can gradually turn towards its next position. What substitution preserves is not merely the depressed key, but continuity of the voice and preparation of the movement.

It is not the standard answer to every legato problem. The sustaining pedal can sometimes preserve the sound, and a short phrase may permit a natural breath. In a fast, crowded texture, forced substitution may squeeze the fingers, twist the wrist or disturb the pulse. Research on piano movement emphasises coordination across the fingers, hand and wrist rather than isolated action by one finger. The test is therefore whether substitution makes the next movement freer, not whether the fingering looks sophisticated.

Practise first without pedal. Hold the long note slowly and make one substitution at the bottom of the key. The note should not sound again, and the wrist should not jump. Connect the following note immediately and check whether the change actually reduced the leap. It is a preparation concealed inside a sustained sound: inaudible, but precisely timed.
