After meeting Chinese Vice-Premier He Lifeng in New York on 20 September, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the United States had proposed an artificial-intelligence incident notification mechanism covering AI-related events that rise to the level of national security. The officials also discussed establishing a US–China AI dialogue. The mechanism remains a proposal for the two countries’ leaders to consider; Reuters reported that China’s public response was unclear and that the Chinese official account confirmed only that AI had been discussed.
US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said the two sides had also agreed to advance the “Board of Trade” arrangement discussed by their leaders in May and to keep working on categories of non-sensitive goods that could receive lower tariffs. He identified consumer products, agricultural goods, energy products and medical devices as possible categories. Greer said export controls on advanced AI chips and semiconductor-manufacturing equipment were not on the agenda for the AI mechanism talks.

The Australian Treasury released an Intergenerational Report on 21 September containing long-term projections for population, the economy and public finances over the next 40 years. It projects average annual population growth of 0.9 per cent, down from 1.4 per cent over the previous four decades. It also projects that deaths will outnumber births for the first time in the 2060s and that the number of Australians aged over 85 will triple by 2066.
The report identifies artificial intelligence, geopolitical fragmentation, the energy transition, population ageing and the shift towards a service-based economy as major changes affecting future economic conditions. It projects real GDP per person to grow by about 1.2 per cent a year over the next four decades, compared with 1.5 per cent over the preceding 40 years. These figures are Treasury projections, not population or economic outcomes that have already occurred.
The report also projects increased demand for health and aged-care services, with areas that have older populations likely to face greater labour shortages. In a speech accompanying the report, Treasurer Jim Chalmers said policy responses would need to address technology adoption, skills, investment and regulatory reform.
United States
CNN, MS NOW and Politico said on 21 September that they had notified the Trump administration they were filing a lawsuit over the denial of White House access to journalists from the three organisations. They said the case would be brought in the US District Court for the District of Columbia and would claim that the access restrictions violated First Amendment rights. That constitutional claim is the plaintiffs’ position; no court ruling has been made.
The Associated Press reported that the organisations’ journalists were denied entry to the White House on 19 September, one day after President Donald Trump said the outlets would be barred because he regarded their coverage as “fake news”. Reuters reported that the White House had not responded to a request for comment by the time of publication. The case may involve emergency hearings, but the timing remains subject to court scheduling.
