At 10 am on 2 September, the land route to the core area affected by the mudslide near Gyirong Port in Shigatse, Tibet, was substantially reopened. Xinhua reported that rescuers, supplies and some equipment had entered the core area by road and begun more extensive operations. Restoring the route allowed personnel and heavy machinery, previously constrained by the road break, to reach the main operating area.
After the disaster on 26 August, the final kilometres of the G216 highway leading to the core area were severely damaged. Sections of the road base were washed away, and mud was between 1.5 metres and more than 2 metres deep in some places. Xinhua also reported that rockfalls, landslides and other secondary hazards remained. Rescue teams continued to search priority areas with life-detection equipment and search dogs, adjusting their deployment as conditions changed. Reopening the route changed how resources could reach the site, while search operations and hazard monitoring continued.
Australia
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission approved Kimberly-Clark's acquisition of Kenvue on 2 September, subject to conditions. Kimberly-Clark must divest Kenvue's Carefree and Stayfree period-care brands in Australia to a purchaser approved by the ACCC.
The regulator found that the companies were two of the three major suppliers of period-care products in Australia. Without the divestiture, the transaction would reduce the number of major suppliers from three to two and could substantially lessen competition. The ACCC said the divestiture was intended to preserve an independent competitor. This is the fourth acquisition cleared with conditions since Australia's mandatory merger-notification regime commenced on 1 January 2026. Businesses whose transactions meet the notification thresholds must notify the ACCC and cannot complete the acquisition before receiving approval.
United States
The US Department of Justice announced on 1 September that law-enforcement agencies in the United States, Bulgaria, Hungary and Romania, working with private-sector organisations including CrowdStrike and the Shadowserver Foundation, had taken coordinated action to disrupt the infrastructure of the Sality malware and peer-to-peer botnet. The Justice Department, Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Defense Criminal Investigative Service seized Sality-linked domains in the United States, while European law-enforcement partners acted against additional linked domains hosted in Europe.
The Justice Department said Sality had installed malware on compromised devices since 2003 and had enabled cryptocurrency theft and cyberattacks against victims in the United States and abroad. Its peer-to-peer architecture allowed infected computers to exchange commands directly, reducing dependence on a single central server. CrowdStrike said a peer-to-peer sinkholing operation conducted on 31 August isolated infected machines and rendered the operator's command channel inoperative. The company estimated that the network had been capable of distributing malicious payloads to more than 15,000 infected machines worldwide. The Shadowserver Foundation is working with internet service providers and computer security incident response teams to identify infections and assist with notification and remediation. The device count and technical effects are figures reported by participants in the operation, and remediation work remains under way.
