Prokofiev’s Toccata resembles a machine gradually exposing its parts: repeated-note axle, chromatic gears, chordal pistons and expanding register. It sounds nearly uncontrolled, yet exact addition and retrieval govern the structure.

Mechanical does not mean inflexible

Long phrase and direction exist above the pulse. Equal tension in every bar produces only noise; oppression comes from progressive addition and diminishing space.

Hear moments of jamming

Brief pauses, rhythmic displacement or sudden changes of register resemble gears failing to mesh. They make continuous movement dangerous rather than mistaken.

  1. Hear whether pulse changes.
  2. Count structural chord impacts.
  3. Follow register expanding outwards.
