People Enlarge the Way; the Way Does Not Enlarge People

“People can enlarge the Way; the Way does not enlarge people.” The sentence appears in the Wei Ling Gong book of the Analects. Here, “enlarge” means to extend and bring into fuller expression. A principle may point in a direction, but it does not perfect a person automatically. The Way takes shape in the world through human understanding, choice and action.

This neither places an individual above principle nor lets anyone transfer responsibility to an abstraction. When we ask whether a value has force today, correct words are not enough; we must also ask how it enters judgement, institutions and ordinary conduct. People must enlarge the Way, while remaining answerable to it.
