“Learning adds day by day; following the Way reduces day by day.” The line appears in chapter 48 of the Laozi. The text continues, “Reduce and reduce again, until one reaches non-action.” It sets two movements beside each other: learning accumulates knowledge, distinctions and methods, while following the Way removes forcing, contrivance and needless interference.
“Daily reduction” is not an attack on learning, nor a demand to stop acting. It asks whether growing ability can be accompanied by less insistence on controlling everything. Faced with a complex task, adding tools may be necessary; removing futile steps matters too, so that effort does not obscure the action itself.
