
If we look only at this headline, it is easy to be drawn in by the tension it implicitly creates. This is a technique commonly used by today’s news media: readers focus on the content itself, while media platforms focus on capturing readers’ attention—often by deliberately manufacturing tension to attract clicks.
In this case, the tension is obvious. Security agencies themselves would fall within the scope of a Royal Commission’s scrutiny, so the decision of whether to establish such a commission cannot simply rely on the views of security experts who may themselves become subjects of the investigation.
