Read the offence, date, location, vehicle and due date on the notice. Then choose the correct action: pay, nominate the responsible person, request review or withdrawal, arrange payment, or elect court. These are different pathways.
Three things not to do first
- Do not ignore the due date. Delay adds cost and can trigger licence or registration action.
- Do not pay first and assume every review option remains available; read the local process.
- Do not rely only on “I am usually careful” or “the fine is expensive”. Address an official ground and attach evidence.
The anatomy of a useful application
- Outcome: identify the notice and whether you seek withdrawal, a caution or reconsideration.
- Timeline: describe events chronologically with short sentences and exact dates.
- Ground: connect the facts to official categories such as issue error, special or exceptional circumstances, a good record or another stated ground.
- Evidence: photographs, parking ticket, permit, medical letter, mechanic or towing report, police report or travel documents.
- Attachment index: number each item so the reviewer can understand its purpose.
NSW and ACT use different language
NSW: most fines can be sent for review through MyServiceNSW, preferably before the due date. ACT: a notice generally gives 28 days to act. You may request withdrawal or dispute liability. Disputing liability means the ACT Magistrates Court will hear the matter if it is not withdrawn, creating different risk and cost.
If the real problem is inability to pay in full, do not present financial hardship as proof that no offence occurred. NSW and the ACT both offer more time, payment plans or particular hardship routes; use the one that fits the problem.
