How Did Four Old Bearings Become a Wooden Cart?

In some factory and mining compounds and town lanes during the 1970s and early 1980s, older children built low carts from scrap timber and discarded bearings. There was no single design. A long board formed the body, with a timber bar or metal axle at each end and a bearing fitted on either side. The front crosspiece was sometimes attached through a central bolt so the rider could steer it with their feet or a rope. Access to the materials often depended on the family’s working environment, and the toy was by no means found everywhere.

Bearings made a harder, louder sound on concrete than ordinary wheels. Finishing the assembly did not mean the cart was ready. If the four wheels were out of line, it pulled to one side; if the board was too narrow, turning easily upset the balance. One child might steady the cart, another push it a short distance, and another crouch down to see which bearing was catching before they adjusted a nail, washer or axle.

The game truly began with the test run. On flat ground one child could ride while another pushed; on a gentle slope they took turns rolling down and dragging the cart back. Who went first, where the run began and when everyone had to stop for someone ahead were settled on the spot. This was less a finished toy available to everyone than a small engineering project made from local materials, practical skill and cooperation. When it finally rolled freely, the ride carried all the earlier repairs with it.
