An individual without dependants is generally registered automatically for Medicare Safety Nets. A couple or family must register, even when everyone appears on the same Medicare card.
Why registration matters
The Safety Nets tally eligible gap or out-of-pocket amounts for out-of-hospital Medicare services. A registered family’s eligible costs can be combined, making it possible to reach an annual threshold sooner. After a threshold is reached, higher Medicare benefits apply to some services. The system does not cap provider fees or make all later care free.
Who can form a family
- a married couple who are not separated, with or without dependants;
- a de facto couple, with or without dependants;
- a single person with dependants.
For Safety Net purposes, a dependant is generally a financially supported child under 16, or a full-time student aged 16 to 25.
Register once, then maintain it
- Complete the Services Australia couples and families registration and amendment form, or call the Medicare program on 132 011.
- Keep each member’s Medicare details correct. Annual re-registration is not required.
- Report a birth, separation or other change in family circumstances.
- When notified that you are near a threshold, confirm the family members before higher benefits can apply.
Practical check: do not rely on sharing a card. Use Medicare through myGov to confirm the Safety Net family and the year’s tally.
