Thales: Life and Main Philosophical Ideas

Thales of Miletus is usually regarded as one of the beginning figures of ancient Greek natural philosophy and a representative of the Milesian school. Reliable information about his life is limited, and many later accounts contain legendary elements. A cautious summary is that he probably lived from the late seventh century BCE into the first half of the sixth century BCE, with Miletus on the western coast of Asia Minor as his main intellectual setting. Tradition includes him among the Seven Sages of Greece and presents him as someone interested not only in politics and practical judgment, but also in astronomy, geometry, engineering, and the question of the fundamental principle of the world.

Miletus was an important Ionian city shaped by trade, navigation, and contact with other civilizations. This environment may have exposed Thales to mathematical, astronomical, and measuring techniques from Egypt and Babylonia. Ancient sources attribute several achievements to him, including the prediction of an eclipse, the measurement of pyramid height, geometric discoveries, and practical economic foresight. It is difficult to verify these stories one by one, but together they show how later tradition understood Thales: not merely as an abstract thinker, but as someone who connected observation, calculation, practical intelligence, and explanation of the world.

1. Water as the arche of all things

Thales is best known for the claim that water is the arche, or first principle, of all things. This should not be read as a modern chemical claim. It is a metaphysical and explanatory proposal: what do things come from, what sustains them, and what underlying reality might they return to? Because water is closely associated with life, moisture, growth, and transformation, Thales may have understood it as the most basic and universal principle of generation.

2. From mythic explanation to natural explanation

The importance of Thales lies not only in the answer he gave, but in the kind of question he asked. Earlier Greek myth often explained the world through divine genealogies and the will of gods. Thales shifted the question toward nature itself: can the world be explained through a principle internal to nature? This movement marks one of the decisive beginnings of both philosophy and science.

3. Nature as ordered and intelligible

Behind Thales’ thought is a deeper assumption: nature is not merely a pile of disconnected events, but an ordered whole that can be understood by human reason. Whether the famous story of his eclipse prediction is fully historical or not, the fact that later writers associated such stories with him shows what Thales came to symbolize: a new intellectual posture based on observation, inference, and rational explanation.

4. A hylozoic tendency

Ancient sources also report that Thales thought all things were full of gods, or that magnets possessed soul because they could move iron. This should not be confused with later theological doctrine. It is better understood as an early view of nature as internally alive or animated. For Thales, nature was not dead matter, but a whole with movement and vitality within it.

Historical significance

Thales’ answer may seem simple today, but his way of asking the question was historically transformative. He partially separated explanation from mythic narrative and inherited authority, and moved it toward rational claims that could be discussed, challenged, and replaced. Later thinkers such as Anaximander and Anaximenes continued the path opened by Thales by asking whether there is a single principle behind the diversity of things.

For this reason, the lasting importance of Thales is not that water is the correct answer, but that he established a direction of inquiry: the world can be questioned as a whole, nature can be explained from within nature, and human reason can search for the common ground beneath change. In this sense, he is often described as one of the founding figures of Western philosophy.
