Yandex's third major data centre shuts down completely
On 11 October, Yandex confirmed that infrastructure at a data centre in Russia's Vladimir region had been damaged in a drone attack and that the facility had stopped operating completely. Some services were unavailable, while no employees were injured. This is a new status change rather than a repeat of the earlier incidents: on 9 October, Yandex had already confirmed that its Sasovo data centre was fully shut down and that part of its Kaluga facility was out of service. Vladimir became the third major site to lose all or part of its operating capacity within several days. Reuters also confirmed that Sasovo housed two of the three supercomputers Yandex uses to develop its AI model. The consecutive outages have therefore reduced the company's publicly confirmed compute and cloud-service operating capacity, although Yandex has not disclosed whether specific AI equipment in Vladimir was damaged.
In a 11 October update on Yandex Pay, the company said damage to the additional data centre meant that some users still could not check balances, make purchases or transfer money. Yandex said account records were stored in multiple copies across separate sites and that its integrity checks found no lost records. Restoration continued, but the company could not provide a firm completion time. The confirmed limits are the complete shutdown of the data centre, disruption to some online and financial services, and continuing service failover and recovery. Still unconfirmed are the extent of the Vladimir damage, recoverable capacity, the specific effect on model training or inference, a complete equipment inventory across the three affected sites, and the time for full service restoration.
