LocalAI 4.11.0 adds model failover and signed OCI galleries

The LocalAI project marked version 4.11.0 as released on GitHub at 21:56 UTC on 2 October, or 7:56 am on 3 October in Sydney. This is a public code release with downloadable builds, rather than a product preview. Its release record covers 243 merged pull requests and 353 commits spanning model serving, audio processing, structured decisions, model distribution and single-host operations.

The change with the clearest effect on deployment is the addition of model failover chains. One public model name can now refer to an ordered set of local or remote targets. If the preferred target encounters a transport error, server error, out-of-memory condition or rate limit before a response begins, LocalAI can try the next target and use health checks to decide when to return traffic to the preferred one. Response headers, an event stream and the administration interface expose which model actually served a request, and an administrator can temporarily pin a chain to a particular target. Failover does not restart a request after the first response byte has been sent. Ordinary 4xx errors, client cancellation and requests larger than 32 MiB are also outside the same retry path.

The release also allows a complete model gallery to be distributed as an OCI artifact. LocalAI resolves and pins the artifact digest, verifies signatures against Sigstore policies, applies layer, size and extraction-path limits, and binds cached content to the verification policy under which it was accepted. In strict integrity mode, an OCI gallery without verification configuration is refused. A signature or policy failure does not silently fall back to an older cache. These mechanisms change how self-hosted model configurations and backend components can be distributed and checked through their supply chain.

Other additions combine transcription, speaker diarisation and sound-event detection into audio scenes; allow a speaker name to be remembered after an explicit action; expose structured choice, score and level questions through POST /v1/systemone; and generate skeletal animation through POST /3d/animate. Speaker profiles are currently process-local and disappear after a restart, and they are not synchronised across independent frontends. Recognition is not proof of identity or consent. The decision endpoint validates request size, question counts, options and state, but this release does not provide an independent evaluation of decision accuracy.

The public code, release notes and installation routes confirm that these functions are included in 4.11.0. Reliability of failover under sustained production loads, speaker-recognition accuracy, compatibility of the signed-OCI workflow across private registries, and the performance of the new backends remain supported mainly by the project's implementation notes and tests. No public independent deployment evaluation was identified for this release.
