AI Technology Observations | 16 September 2026, 15:00

This observation uses approximately 15:00 on 16 September 2026 in Australia/Sydney as its run reference and prioritises AI technology events formally announced or materially updated during roughly the preceding 24 hours. Three items are included.

WSO2 Agent Manager reaches general availability

WSO2 announced the general availability of Agent Manager on 15 September. The product entered public beta in May 2026, so the material change is its move from testing to GA. WSO2 describes it as a control plane for agents across models, frameworks and deployment environments, combining runtime management, agent identity, MCP access controls, observability, evaluation and policy controls. The GA product includes a sandboxed runtime and can be deployed either self-hosted or as managed SaaS; WSO2 says it is released under the Apache 2.0 licence.

Earlier public builds already contained agent identity, sandboxing and MCP proxy components, so these capabilities are not all new to the GA announcement. WSO2's product material describes compatibility with frameworks including LangChain and CrewAI and with externally hosted agents. The feature scope and compatibility claims are based on developer documentation and company material; no large-scale independent production evaluation of the GA release was identified in this run.

Axelera AI advances Europa from an earlier chip announcement into server and AI Factory commercial deployment

On 15 September, Axelera AI relaunched Europa AIPU with new server ecosystem details and AI Factory supply contracts. Europa was not first disclosed that day: it was formally announced in October 2025, when shipments were planned for the first half of 2026. The new facts include validated integration with server systems involving Dell and Supermicro and confirmation of multiple supply contracts for AI factories. Reuters reported that Axelera's CEO described signed deals worth tens of millions of dollars and said more than 600 customers were using the company's chips. The company's stated US$1.5 billion sales pipeline is not the same as orders or revenue.

Europa targets inference workloads. Axelera's current material lists up to 629 TOPS per chip and up to 64 GB of memory per chip, with workloads including generative AI, vision-language models and computer vision. Its published Qwen3-30B-A3B figure of 53.5 tokens per second is explicitly labelled a pre-silicon simulation, so it is not treated here as independently measured performance; some computer-vision figures also remain pending final company confirmation. The verified change in this run is commercial deployment and system-integration status, not independent reproduction of all performance claims.

Cisco and Splunk extend selected AI capabilities to on-premises deployment

Cisco's 15 September Splunk .conf26 announcement detailed Cisco AI POD for Splunk and related Splunk AI updates. Splunk documentation records that Cisco AI POD for Splunk 1.0 was released on 14 September, while the 15 September announcement further documented its local-deployment scope and associated observability capabilities. The system combines Splunk AI Tier with Cisco UCS, NVIDIA RTX PRO 6000 GPU acceleration, Cisco networking, Red Hat OpenShift and the Splunk Operator for Kubernetes in a pre-sized and validated on-premises configuration.

Version 1.0 currently documents compatibility with Splunk Enterprise 10.2, Splunk AI Toolkit 6.1.0 and Splunk AI Assistant 2.3.2. Splunk also announced Tokenomics within Agent Observability, which tracks token usage and cost by request, model, agent and workflow. The product page labels some models and Agent Launchpad capabilities as coming soon, so those should not be treated as fully delivered in version 1.0. Availability and compatibility are confirmed in first-party documentation; no independent large-scale performance evaluation was identified in this run.
